Welcome to Lone Rock Point

View Rock Point iTree Plots in a larger map

Site Location
Lone Rock Point in Burlington, Vermont

Site Description
Rock Point consists of Old White Cedar bluffs along the shores of Lake Champlain. The inland forest is comprised of mostly mixed hardwoods, cedars, and pines. There is an old field in the middle of the property.

Project Objectives
Our original plan was to use iTree Eco, which was developed by the Forest Service in order to provide information about the ecological value of trees in urban and suburban areas. It gives information about forest structure, and also analyzes services trees provide for larger towns and cities. It can also develop estimations of the total carbon and pollutant sequestration capacity of trees. In addition, it can put a monetary value to trees, highlighting the ecosystem services they provide. However, there were some technical difficulties with the software and our data. The software requires 30 plots minimum in order to create an analysis. With our time constraints, we were only able to collect data for 5 plots. The program also requires additional software, such as ArcGIS, that was unavailable to us. Therefore, we could not work with iTree and decided to come up with an analysis on our own.

In this blog, we have included our data from our 5 plots, as well a descriptions and photos of the plots. We also analyzed the health of the trees in the plots, using indicators such as crown spread and health, and presence/absence of disease.
