Plot 3 was riddled with white cedars. We stopped at the top of the bluffs, and walked into the forest on the other side of the path. There was quite a bit of bedrock poking through the soil and fallen leaves. We found a very large ironwood (12.5" dbh) on this plot; ironwood (Ostrya virginiana) grows very slowly, and usually ranges in the 4-7" range, so to find one this big was exiting! The cedars all had between 20-30% live crown ratios, and no evidence of disease, making them decently healthy. They were straight and self-pruning. right outside our plot, there was a really beautiful cedar (photo, right) that had amazing bark. We would have centered our plot around it, but then it wouldn't have been random, or indicative of the surrounding forest.
